Woodpeckers (Year 4)

Welcome back Woodpeckers!

Mrs Cooper and I hope you had a great summer and that you are ready to work as hard as you can this academic year. We will do our best to make the work as interesting as we can to keep you 100% engaged in the learning process.

This half term we are covering a variety of themes in our subjects.

In English we will be looking at some short stories, some fables and other more contemporary stories and setting comprehension tasks to make sure you have understood what you’ve read. This will help improve your understanding of a story, your reading and your writing.

Maths will be focussing on understanding the use of numbers. We will do this by using things like number lines, for example.

Our topic is the Romans and how they changed the UK, which is not only a fascinating subject but also gives you the opportunity, in Art/DT to do some challenging and creative work.

PE is on Wednesday afternoon (this half term it’s cricket) and Friday morning (basketball in the hall) and you will need PE kit that’s suitable for both outside and inside. It’s a good idea to leave your PE kit here every week and take it home every half term to be washed (unless it gets really muddy in the meantime!)

Homework will always include reading. I would like you to read every day – it’s the best way to improve your spelling. You will also be given spellings to learn, too, on weekly basis and you will be given a spelling test once a week. I will also give out, starting next week, homework which will either be some Maths that we’ve been working on in class, or some writing which we’ve been working on in English or for our topic. This will be given out on a Friday and should be handed in by the following Thursday morning.

If you have any worries or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to either me or Mrs Cooper. If you don't feel you can, though, then please ask your parents to drop me a note, write in your diary or come in and see me in person.

I’m looking forward to an excellent year full of growth and new experiences and I hope you are, too!
